5819 Fetish Necklaces Arapaho Lizard Amulet c.1870 A naval amulet in the shape of a lizard. These small pouches contain the umbilical cord of the child and were carried by the wearer, often to the grave. They were symbolic of long life and protection against danger. The Native Americans believed that lizards had waken powers – they were difficult to capture and kill. Hide, sinew sewn, fully beaded on one side in lavender blue beads with three crosses of red with yellow centers, and an outline of red. The verso has a greasy yellow beaded background with one red cross, and an outline of dark blue beads in a zigzag pattern. Four beaded loop drops of yellow and dark green.
