7354 Chorrera Standing Votive C. Pre-Columbian Ecuador Coastal area, Chacras, Manabi Province. Ca. 1800-300 BC. Height 15". Hollow molded ceramic, red slip and brown polished paint with engraved adornments and decoration. Prime example of the Chorrera personage, with several features that make it unique and mark a change in the figurine tradition. The paradigmatic effigy of a high ranking individual or shaman. The anatomical proportions retain a certain relation with reality, but the limbs are short and tapered. The typical "coffee bean" type eyes suggest a mongoloid appearance. The head is adorned by a helmet-like cap or headdress. The engraved adornments clearly represent textile patterns and wear typical of the period, with peculiar designs closely similar to those prevalent in Western Mexico as represented in ceramics of Colima, Jalisco and Nayarit. This coincidence lends credence to the theories advanced for direct contact between the two regions. References available. 4,000.00 |
