7351 Chorrera Swimmer C. Pre-Columbian
Ecuador Coastal area, Manabi Province. Ca. 1800-300 BC. Length 9-1/2". The position of this recumbent figure, typical of the style, has been interpreted as representing the voyage to the afterlife. Similar representations are found in the Maya and Olmec civilizations of Mexico. This item shows signs of both ancient and modern restoration, with the ancient ones denoted by contemporary tapered drill holes to facilitate tying of the broken piece. The modern restoration respected the evidence of the previous work.
